Elizabethan twist is a goldwork thread made of two very fine metal threads twisted together.  It has its own couching technique but also lends itself to couching as outlines or small details.

Use Twist thread by couching over it.  Use either a matching or contrasting sewing thread with a good coating of beeswax.
