Blackwork Embroidery

Blackwork embroidery is traditionally worked in black thread on white even weave linen.  Modern blackwork is worked with counted thread patterns, using different thicknesses of black thread to create shading.

Through its history, blackwork has taken different forms, including more free form styles, with outline stitches and fillings of patterns or seeding and designs more reminiscent of those in Jacobean embroidery.
